- Getting Started
-
-
- Copy all The Multimedia Workshop files into a single
- subdirectory on your hard disk.
-
- ********************* LET'S GET STARTED *********************
-
- There are two ways to learn to use a program like this
- one (Actually there's nothing 'like' The Multimedia Workshop,
- but you know what I mean):
-
- You can read all the documentation, and then start
- practicing, or you can just start it up, and experiment until
- you understand it. With The Multimedia Workshop, that's
- pretty easy to do, because it is quite user-friendly. There's
- plenty of on-line help. But you'll definitely want to check
- this file out after a while to find out about all the tricks
- The Multimedia Workshop can do.
-
- Either way, experimentation is very important, because
- there are many things that you'll learn to do, or to do
- better with practice. There's a lot to this multimedia
- business.
-
- So, what I'm going to attempt to do is cover everything
- in a logical order. This order is to take you from start-up
- through every service available, then finish off with talk
- about external programs and inside tips.
-
- On your disk is a text presentation program called
- DREAM.EXE (which you may already be using) to display this
- file. Anytime you want to look up something specific, press
- the [S] key, and type the word or phrase you are looking for.
- DREAM.EXE will take you directly to the place you want to
- read. You may also want to try DREAM's AUTOSCROLL feature.
- Simply press a number key ([1] through [9]) to turn it on,
- and any other key when you want to turn Autoscroll off. To
- change the speed, press a different number.
-
- LET'S REALLY GET STARTED
-
- All software manuals start this way: Make back-up copies
- of your original disks and put them somewhere safe.
-
- If you have a mouse, make sure your mouse driver is
- loaded. Then switch to the drive/directory containing The
- Multimedia Workshop and type TMW, and press [Enter]. (From
- this point forward, for ease of reading, I won't say, "press
- [Enter]" when doing so would be obvious.)
-
- Press any key to get past the opening screen. If this is
- your very first use of The Multimedia Workshop, you'll be
- asked if you want program sound effects. These assorted
- noises help you keep track of what you are doing, but might
- be disturbing in a crowded, but quiet office. Answer [y] or
- [n].
-
- Then you are prompted for a file name. You can pick a
- file from a list of existing files, or type a new name. You
- can create a new file, or experiment with something from the
- list of demo and example files that come with The Multimedia
- Workshop. Don't choose a .DOC file or something else which is
- not a script file. Most of the script files don't have
- extensions. You can also change the working directory. For
- best results, we recommend that you keep your script files
- and all Multimedia Workshop files in the same directory.
-
- Specifically: If you have VGA, you might want to try
- messing around with GOTO.PEN, or if you have CGA, HERC or
- EGA, perhaps COLORS or INTRO.
-
- *********************** THE MAIN MENU ***********************
-
- The screen flashes blank for a moment, then the main menu
- appears. This is the little bar at the bottom of the screen
- with eight choices. Each of these contains many sub-choices,
- and everything you'll do, starts with a selection from the
- main menu.
